Articles on Range

My Opinion:

High notes are sometimes over rated. In reality we don't play past a E3 that much. I still think that it's good to have a good range good usable range, but if you don't need it then don't worry about it. I'm still not sure after all these years how high notes are produced so I'm not even going to get to deep into the topic. There are already plenty of experts and websites that talk about this. But here are some of the things I do to help my range:

  1. Lip Slurs
  2. Long Tones and Breathing Exercises like Clarke's Technical Studies
  3. Play easy exercises out of the Arban up a octave.

I think that the Claude Gordon Systematic Approach to Daily practice book is a real good book if you want to learn to play high notes and at the same time be musical. Lip slurs help allot, also doing long tones and breathing exercises help allot too to increase the range.
