My Opinion:

Sight reading is a very important part of music in general, specially if you want to do music as a career. Allot of times when you are called to a job you have to sight read and no one is going to want to hire somebody that takes a long time to sight read because it's a waste of time and money. So as far as sight reading goes my advice is if you can get a private teacher get one, sight read something every night when you practice and always bother your band teacher or whatever about music reading questions. Here are some sight reading pointers that I use.

1. Always check the time signature and what key the song is in.
2. Scan threw the song and look for any weird notes.
3. Humm any rhythms that you think you will have problems with
4. Keep a steady beat.
