Articles on Warming Up

My Opinion:

Warm up is very important. Everybody has a different warm up routine, but the key is to find what works for you. Sometimes it takes me 5 minutes to warm up and other times it takes me 30 minutes. How I know when I'm "warmed up" is when my chops feel right and loose. Here is my warm up routine:

  1. Long tones for 1-2 minutes
  2. Double pedals for 30 seconds to 1 minute
  3. Chromatic Scale from low G# to top G on the staff
  4. Basic Lip Slurs until my chops feel flexible
  5. Chromatic scale from low G# to my highest note that I can play and then back down.

This is what works for me everyday. It took me a while to come up with a warm up that really warmed me up, but when I did it sure helped me allot.

I should also mention that warming down is just as important as warming up. If you don't warm up it can have bad affects the following day. I warm up by playing some low relaxed held notes. I usually do pedals.
