One of the most widely used trumpet study books, this series of outstanding
exercises was developed to enhance range, flexibility, and endurance. The preface,
by Dr. Colin, guides the player in preparing himself to play the studies. The
studies are progressive in difficulty and take the student in moderate stages
through basic warm-up procedures to exercises covering spreading intervals,
expanding range, and lip trills. Text completely reset and edited in 1980.
My Opinion :
The book is basically about lip slurs and different lip flexibilities (of course you can probably of figured that out by the title of the book). In the beginning of the book it starts with some text that talks about and explains different subjects like lip flexibitilies, lip trilling, the importance of the tongue, developing resistance, practice and how to warm up. After that the exercises begin. This book can be broken up into 3 different book; Vol. 1 is lip slurs,Vol. 2 lip trilling and Vol. 3 moving air. Each volume starts out with easy exercises and then they gradually get harder.
I personally don't use the book all that often, but I do like the way the book is set up and if I took the time to work on it I would probably see results. Although I don't use the exercises in the book I do use and read threw the different ideas that he has because allot of them make sense and help me allot to understand how the trumpet works.
I personally really like the book and would recommended to anyone that is looking for a great lip flexibility book. What I like most about the book is the way the exercises are written from easy to hard so that the student can gradually work their way up as they get better. Not only do I like the lip slurs exercises, but what I think makes this book different is probably Vol. 3. I say this because he gets into moving air exercises which will teach the student to use there air more efficiently. It's almost like a combination of Clarke meets lip slurs.
Like I said before I would recommend this book to anyone. So if you're the type of person thats looking into perfecting your lip trill and expanding your range this book is a great place to start.
